Special Direct Consolidation Information
From January–June 30, 2012, the U.S. Department of Education will give eligible borrowers the opportunity to consolidate certain loans into a Special Direct Consolidation Loan through the William D. Ford Federal Direct Loan (Direct Loan) Program.
Special Direct Consolidation Loans are not the same as traditional Direct Consolidation Loans and only certain borrowers will be eligible for Special Direct Consolidation Loans. In addition, eligible borrowers will be able to apply for Special Direct Consolidation Loans only during a limited period, from January–June 30, 2012.
What you need to know:
- You will be contacted by a federal loan servicer if you qualify. Since you have loans that we are currently servicing, the federal loan servicer that contacts you will likely be us (FedLoan Servicing), but it may also be Great Lakes Educational Loan Services, Inc., Nelnet or Sallie Mae.
- If you are interested in applying for a Special Direct Consolidation Loan, you will receive instructions on how to apply from the servicer that contacts you.
- Applications for Special Direct Consolidation Loans will be accepted only through a new online process. You will not be able to apply for a Special Direct Consolidation Loan through the online application process that is used for traditional Direct Consolidation Loans.
